Saturday was a nice change of pace.  Usually Trish is running off to photograph a wedding on Saturdays but this weekend Trish and I had the chance to donate our services to a great cause.

A couple weeks ago I received a call from David Hilderley of Century 21 in Woodstock.  We had worked before with him on a charity event in the past so he knew to call us again.  This time Dave was working on a golf tournament to raise funds for Sakura House in Woodstock.  An incredible facility that provides end-of-life care for individuals.  Below is a photo of Sakura House along with some details from their website.

Money raised from this event goes towards supporting their annual operation costs and daily care.

Sakura House, located in Woodstock Ontario, is Oxford County’s only residential hospice and is run by VON Oxford.  It is an alternative care setting where skilled 24 hour end-of-life care is provided by a team of professionals with the assistance of professionally trained volunteers at no cost to patients or their families.  The specialized palliative care provided at Sakura House focuses on living fully in comfort and dignity until the end of life.

For every person who dies, three to five more individuals experience a life-altering journey.  As a partner in the Oxford community that provides palliative support to hundreds of families, we know that the number can be even higher.  VON Oxford has seen first hand how so many lives are touched — and changed forever — by the courage of someone facing the end of life.  We have also witnessed the incredible generosity and community spirit that can come together to help families to cope.  Someday, if your loved one is facing the end of life and you need to bring him or her home to be close to you in Oxford County, Sakura House will be there for them…and for you.

By dinner that night we had a slide show of the day ready to show all the golfers, but due to technical difficulties it could not be shown.  So here it is along with photos from the day.  The best part of the day for me was the INDY 500 style start they had with the golf carts.  What a blast.  ”Start your engines!”

Spring changes are all around.  At Custom Concept Photography we are changing also to serve you better.  Over the last 12 years we have had regular studio hours.  As the photography industry changes so must we. Trish and I find that we are out of the studio more often and prefer not to put up a sign saying,

“Sorry for the inconvenience.  We are out on a Photo shoot and will be back at 4:00pm.”

No one likes to show up at a business and find they are closed at that time.  For that reason effective April 5th Custom Concept Photography will be by appointment only.  Other than that business still carries on as usual.  We feel this shouldn’t affect photography that much as most of our photography is done by appointment already.   Our framing clients will now have to book in rather than walk in.  Pick ups will be similar too.

We understand that there will be an adjustment period for a short time. We apologize for that, but in the long run it will make business more efficient.

We thank you for your patience and Trish and I look forward to growing personally and as a business.  This adjustment will give us the time needed to get out of the studio to meet with clients and network with other business professionals without disappointing  a pop-in client.

About a year ago Trish and I were at a charity event for Big Brothers and Sister of Ingersoll and Tillsonburg.  Being foodies we were excited that the theme of the night was Battle of the Hors d’oeuvres and I was sure to acquaint myself with the judges, Chefs Jonathan and Cynthia Collins.  At that point all I knew of them was that they had cooked for PM Harper, President Obama the President of Mexico, Prince Charles, various other dignitaries and had gone to a great culinary school.   What we didn’t know was that some time after we would start on a personal and professional journey with the Collins family that has been exciting and is still growing.

That night I listened to Jonathan talk about going after what you want and getting out of your comfort zone to achieve greatness.  Jonathan, we have listened and are getting ready for an interesting year.  We look forward to seeing what our journey together brings us.

This was our first project with the Collins family.  Jonathan contacted us and needed portraits for his new website before he guest appeared on the Stephen and Chris Show.  He wanted to involve the whole family along with some individual portraits.  The results are below.

A week later we did Maternity Photos of Cynthia, photographed the birth of their fifth child, Blake, and then soon after, Blake’s newborn in studio session.  Those blog posts to follow soon.

Eight days after Blake was born we were at work again together.  Jonathan had donated a dinner for eight, to and auction, to be prepared in the lucky bidder’s home.  It was to raise funds for the Port Stanley Festival Theatre.  Below is a fusion video of the night and how it unfolded.  Between Trish shooting photographs and I shooting video and stills with my 5dMkll we managed to try a sampling of some of the courses.  It started off with scallops, cauliflower soup, risotto, beef tenderloin main course, cheese tray and then Creme Brulee for dessert.  Of course I’m not describing it as amazing as it was and Jonathan is probably rolling his eyes as he reads this with my poor description so I will let the video talk for itself.  BUT, the dinner was incredible and if you ever get a chance to hire in a chef for a dinner party, I highly recommend it.  It’s decadent!

That’s right.  We have pledged to raise $25,000.00 for a local grass roots charity called PAC 4 Life; Prepare a Child for Life.

Trish, myself and the studio are very involved with babies and children along with others who help in all sorts of ways.  Not only do we photograph many from Bellies to actual Births to all ages, but we are involved with Big Brothers and Sisters, and Trish is also a “Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep” and “Little Heroes” Photographer.

Along the way we have met some incredible people, but none like Wayne and Rosanne Prevett of Kettle Creek Weddings.  We have known him since he started his business in St. Thomas and he even married Trish and I five years ago at our New Year’s Eve wedding.  Last year, when he turned 49, he made a list of goals called 50 b4 50.  He accomplished all but two.  Not bad for an old guy.  One that stuck out to us was his goal to start up a registered Charity to help local children prepare for life.  In his words, while working with local underprivileged children, “We soon began to realize that is was not just low income families that needed support it was the “working poor” who were struggling to see their children develop a well rounded growing up experience.  Having our own newborn we became aware of how costly sports memberships were, how tutoring costs were beyond the average family, camp for a week would not be possible for most Canadian families.”

So how can a photography studio raise $25,000.00 and help PAC4Life?

We are proud to announce a project that will do just that and everyone can be involved.  Custom Concept Photography is producing a limited edition, production run coffee table portrait book featuring children from newborn to 15 years of age.  This beautiful hard covered book will be 10″x 10″ and filled with individual portraits of local children with their first name and a short description of what makes them who they are.  It will be named “Kids of Southern Ontario: Faces of a Generation”.  As the name implies the children have to be from Southern Ontario which is a big area so we have set the boundaries for this book to be Toronto to the Windsor border.  We want to photograph 250 children for the book.  So please help us spread the word by forwarding this on to everyone you know with children.  If you’re on facebook I urge you to join our Kids Of Southern Ontario “Like Page” and invite all your friends to join.  Together we can develop awareness for this charity and raise $25,000.00.

Here’s how it works.

We’re looking for everyday kids to appear in a collectors’ edition coffee table book titled “Kids of Southern Ontario: Faces of a Generation”.

This book will be full of emotive images created in the studio and on location around Southern Ontario by Master Photographic Artist, Trish Roberts of Custom Concept Photography.

To have your child included in this exciting project, simply requires the completion of the registration form and a payment of $85 per child session fee. Proceeds will go to PAC4Life Charity (Prepare a Child for Life) www.pac4life.ca
